TERROIR | On the Northeast side of Mt. Etna, with deep volcanic sands and red pumice stone at 640 meter elevation.

Generazione Alessandro is the project of three cousins – Benedetto, Anna and Benedetto (Three Cousins one mission)– who together with their fathers, are the 4th generation running their family’s winery in the province of Palermo. Their passion for viticulture sprung from a young age through participating in the family’a wine harvests.Strengthened by years of honing a wide range of skills – Benedetto in Oenology, Anna in Law, and Benedetto in Agronomics and Economics – and working at their family’s winery, Alessandro di Camporeale, a Tre Bicchieri producer of Catarratto and other Sicilian varieties in Camporeale, the cousins decided to embark on a new endeavor on Etna.
The cousins farm about 10 hectares on the Northeast side of the volcano, in 2 adjacent communes, Castiglione di Sicilia and Linguaglossa. Even though all of the vineyards are located on plots of land quite close in proximity to each other, all have differing geomorphological and microclimatic characteristics, which profoundly influence the yield of the grapes. The terracing of the sites, delimited by dry stone walls, allows G. Alessandro to take advantage of the varying soil elevations. Among new plantings are quite a few high density plots of old vines, trained in the Alberello (“little trees”) system, all farmed sustainably.

The Piano Filici Contrada – Cru, essentially – extends for about 5 hectares on the north-east side of the volcano in the commune of Castiglione on its border with Linguaglossa. The vegetation around the vineyard is rich in ferns, in Sicilian dialect called “filici”, which lend the Contrada its name. Bordered on the west by woods and to the east by Monte Pomiciaro, Piano Filici is divided into two different sections: the is east characterized by a high percentage of red pumice stone, a greater exposure to the sun and a ventilation that make it ideal for the cultivation of red berried grapes, while the west is comprised of deep volcanic sands and enjoys greater shading, ideal for producing white varieties. This vineyard provides the grapes that give life to the Croceferro Etna Rosso DOC and Trainara Etna Bianco DOC.
